Mar 20, 2025 5:21 PM UTCAll that money sent to Africa in the 80s fixed nothing. All it did was pad the wallets of the dictators and warlords of the continent. USAID proved that money was being wasted on that continent. You want to "Save the World," send then a check from your personal bank account. I'm tired of my tax dollars being wasted and showing ZERO positive results.

I am here motivated by the symphonic potential of the song. The single was a tremendous success, both commercially and philanthropically. "We Are The World" became the fastest-selling pop single in American history, topping the Billboard 100 for a month straight. The song also received 4 Grammy Awards, including Best Record of the Year and Best Song of the Year. It set a precedent for a generation of similar fundraising music projects and demonstrated music's power to raise awareness, inspire change and even bring hotshot pop stars together in humble harmony. The documentary ‘The Greatest Night in Pop’ is now streaming on Netflix.
USAID..? In February 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump's administration moved to dismantle the USAID, citing the overseas aid agency's alleged "waste" and "abuse" of federal resources.
The total fundraising amount that Supergroup USA For Africa had earned for "We Are The World" was $63 million in 1986, which today would equal roughly $227 million adjusting for inflation. Half was spent on emergency relief and the balance on 500 projects in 18 African countries and 250 Africa-focused programs in the U.S., Canada and Europe, according to USA for Africa (quote NBC).
