Deforestation – An assault to the planet we live!

The exploding human population and its demand for space and resources are extinguishing plant species at an unprecedented rate. The problem is especially severe in the tropics where more than half of the human population lives and where population growth is fastest. Fifty million acres of tropical rain forests, an area about the size of state of Washington are cleared each year, a rate that would completely eliminate Earth’s forests within 25 years. The most common cause of this destruction is the slash-and-burn cleaning of forests for agriculture and housing. Habitat destruction of rain forests and other ecosystems is claiming hundreds of species each year. This rate is faster than in any other period, even during the extensive Permian and Cretaceous extinctions. As forests disappear so do thousands of plant species and SO DO WE!

Once a species becomes extinct, it can never return!
