They’d heard too many sad songs of maybe
And sat through long movies with blank looks
Feeling that there was little left to see
But to read about love in long-winded books
The love they sought was always for forever
It was nowhere to be found it seemed
Emotionally drained from a fruitless endeavour
Just another fantasy that they had dreamed
Until they met one day, not expecting any more
Except a friendly chat or ‘tell me what’s new’
Both were too alone, both were too unsure
But needed each other, as long lived people do
So stubborn as mules and set in their ways
Buried deep under layers of habit and pride
Things did not go smoothly for many old days
(Somehow they knew they belonged side by side)
His love for her meant ensuring she was content
Without any thoughts for just his own needs
For many years alone had taught him this meant
That togetherness is the road that always leads
Each willingly mellowed in their own different way
Never thinking that feelings like this could ever be
And slowly in time they grew closer each day
As deep in their hearts, they were both set free…
